Heterosexual Panic
s-l-i-c-e is proud to announce «Heterosexual Panic», a large-scale installation and publication launch by Timo Seber and MYSTI.
The exhibition title «Heterosexual Panic» derives from ‘Homosexual / Gay Panic’, a term used in the USA as a legal defence strategy. It is intended to justify a temporary lack of control, triggered by unwanted, sexual approaches by same-sex people, which lead to violent outbreaks and murder. Scientific attempts to justify Homosexual Panic as temporary insanity, are part of a system that legitimises an amalgam of irrational fears, hatred, and structural discrimination against homosexuality. Inverting the term, Seber and MYSTI’s «Heterosexual Panic» considers homosexual narratives within a world that consistently re-establishes heterosexuality as the standard for coexistence.
Timo Seber (*1984, Cologne, Germany) studied at Kunsthochschule für Medien, Cologne, in the classes of Marcel Odenbach and Johannes Wohnseifer (2006-2011). Seber is represented by Galerie Tobias Naehring. His current solo show «I’d appreciate your input» is on at Galerie Tobias Naehring, Berlin 02.07. – 28.08.2021.
MYSTI, a soured queen, prefers not to write about art like notches on a bedpost the way most artist bios get read.
s-l-i-c-e is a curatorial initiative set up in 2020 by Rory Biddulph and Robert Prideaux. It was created to allow artists, curators and performers to develop new projects.
