An examination of mechanical Maria phantasms in film using the background of the constructed figure of the mechanical Maria from Fritz Lang’s Metropolis (1927), the grandmother of all robots, cyborgs and replicants. By comparing film extracts from science fiction films, Bjørn Melhus explores different forms of androids, their motives, physical boundaries and augmentations and myths of their creation and destruction.
